Karen Sledge, vice president – controller at the Broadcast
Communications Systems business of Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS),
has been featured in Profiles in Diversity Journal's 10th annual
list of Women Worth Watching®. She is one of 131 business
representatives whose names were submitted for the recognition by
their employers.
Each representative shares her personal leadership journey
successes in a full-page mentoring essay in the September/October
2011 issue of the publication. The essays are designed to encourage
aspiring business leaders, and to help advance women into
leadership ranks.
Sledge's essay discusses her philosophy of goal-driven
risk-taking, whether it is just being persistent or taking on
career opportunities that are particularly challenging. “There is
an art to this kind of risk-taking, one that is grounded in a clear
sense of how you want to advance in your career,” she said.
Sledge also encourages relationship building. “It’s essential to
have a trusted group to help advance your career and improve your
leadership abilities, from those who sponsor your initiatives to
others you can turn to with tough questions.”
"We’d like to extend our most sincere congratulations to all of
the women who are being recognized and honored as this year’s Women
Worth Watching,” said James Rector, publisher and CEO of Profiles
in Diversity Journal. "I’m equally proud of the hundreds of
companies that employ them. They get it. I hope more young women
will take note of which companies are leading the way to full
career development."
"Karen represents the exceptional leadership qualities that are
key to making Harris a success, and we salute her achievements as
well as those of the many other successful women professionals at
Harris," said Jeff Shuman, senior vice president, Chief Human
Resources and Administrative Officer, Harris Corporation.
Sledge is an experienced financial executive with an extensive
background managing large and diverse teams and projects. She
currently is responsible for overseeing strategic planning,
financial reporting and forecasting, and internal controls for the
Harris Broadcast Communications Systems business.
Prior to joining Harris, Sledge held the position of vice
president of finance at Avaya, a privately held telecommunications
company specializing in enterprise network, telephony and call
center technology. Prior to her role with Avaya, Sledge spent more
than 20 years at Nortel Networks, where she gained global financial
expertise during tenures in the U.S., England and Canada.
Sledge has a bachelor’s degree in business administration from
Baylor University and a master’s degree in business administration
from the University of Texas at Dallas. She is a certified public
