SAN DIEGO, Nov. 17 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- (MILCOM, Booth #931) -- Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS) researchers will present five papers that address challenges and solutions related to network-centric battlespace communications during MILCOM 2008, the premier military communications conference being held November 17-19 at the San Diego Convention Center. Topics, authors and presenters are as follows: -- "Available User Information Rate Capacities in Battlespace Network Centric Sensor Operations" The paper describes the delivery of timely warfighter information using Internet Protocols across various communications networks and discusses major aspects of a reliable Network-Centric Operations communications system, as well as performance of required network elements. The paper is co-authored by Dr. Jerry Brand, who will present the paper, and Bob Bach. -- "The Use of a Standard Backplane in a Modular Satellite Communications Terminal Architecture" The paper describes the use of a common or standard backplane architecture to provide a more useable and reusable reference model for modular satellite communications terminals. The paper also delves into a reference architecture's backplane formation from multiple perspectives, such as suggested hardware and software module features that facilitate re-usability as well as interoperability; and discusses an open system approach that makes it easy to add capabilities. It is co-authored by Dr. Jerry Brand, who will present the paper, and Vlad Kowaliwskyj. -- "A Comparison of FDD and TDD/TDMA Architectures for Airborne Backbone Network Traffic" The paper addresses the design and development of high-capacity, airborne, backbone IP networks to extend the DoD's Global Information Grid into the tactical battlespace. The paper presents the architecture of general and airborne backbone networks through discrete event simulation methods. A network composed of FDD (Frequency Division Duplex) links is quantitatively compared to a network composed of TDD (Time Division Duplex) links. The paper is co-authored by Dr. Stanley Adams, Dr. Bibb Cain, Pete Griessler, and Keith Olds. Olds is chief systems architect for Battlespace Networking at Harris and will present the paper. -- "Dynamic Rejection of Multiple Co-site interferers through Wideband RF Photonic Notch Filter" The paper presents an optical technique to mitigate interfering signals by generating nulls at specific frequencies, using a dual-output Mach-Zehnder modulator, optical delay, and balanced detectors. The paper demonstrates the nulling of interfering signals by over 40 dB without attenuating the signal of interest. The paper is co-authored by Dr. Charles Middleton, who will present the paper, and Dr. Richard DeSalvo. -- Dr. Vince Kovarik will present a classified paper that discusses a specific application for Dynamic Spectrum Access (DSA)-enabled tactical handheld radios. The paper was co-authored by Dr. Kovarik and Dr. DeSalvo. The five Harris technical papers being presented at MILCOM 2008 can be found at http://www.milcom.org/ .
