More Than $1 Billion MELBOURNE, Fla., Nov. 12
/PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS), an
international communications and information technology company,
has been recognized by G.I. Jobs magazine as one of the nation's
top 50 military-friendly employers for its commitment to hiring
veterans and for its participation in various initiatives that
support veterans and their families. Criteria for the award include
a company's assets dedicated to military hiring, its Reserve and
National Guard employee policies, the percentage of new hires who
are veterans, veteran training programs, and the company's
prior-three-years' rankings in the preceding categories. "In the
military, our troops learn how to define a mission, develop a plan,
apply resources and execute the plan with superior leadership
skills," said Rich McCormack, G.I. Jobs publisher. "This real-world
experience solving complex problems at such a young age makes our
veterans hot commodities to corporate America. And it's why our Top
50 employers have put their military hiring programs into
overdrive. Simply making the list is a remarkable achievement. Only
two percent of eligible firms make the list of 50." "Thousands of
veterans return to the civilian workforce annually, representing a
rich resource of talented and motivated employees who help
companies like Harris to grow and compete more effectively," said
Howard L. Lance, chairman, president, and chief executive officer
of Harris. "We are proud to have achieved this honor in what is a
very competitive selection process. Our deep commitment to programs
that recruit and serve the men and women of our nation's military
will continue." Harris has 1,493 veterans among its almost 16,500
employees worldwide. The company has specific programs focused on
military recruitment, with four full-time employees averaging 50
percent of their time on sourcing and hiring candidates with
military-related skill sets or with prior military experience. In
addition, 40 percent of the annual recruitment-advertising budget
targets military-related hiring. The Harris recruiting team posts
available positions at Transition Assistance Programs offices at
military bases across the nation and has participated in more than
13 military-related job fairs within a 12-month period. Four times
a year, Harris hosts the Space Coast Industry Liaison Group, a
strategic and interactive networking partnership among federal
contractors and federal, state and local equal employment agencies.
The agencies include Job Link, a network of one-stop career centers
offering a variety of services to veteran job seekers, and the
Veterans Administration, which offers employment assistance. In
2008, Harris received the Champions of Veterans Enterprise Award in
the category of Corporate Achievement from the U.S. Department of
Veterans Affairs Center for Veterans Enterprise. The program
recognizes federal contractors that have awarded $1 million dollars
or more to Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Businesses. Other
Harris initiatives include support of the non-profit Fisher House,
which provides a 'home away from home' for military family members
who wish to remain close to a loved one during hospitalization;
support of the Walter Reed Medical Center I, II and III in
Washington, D.C., which provides services to patients, family
members and soldiers serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom and
Operation Enduring Freedom; and support of the USO of Metropolitan
Washington. Harris also teamed with the Orlando Magic in 2007 and
2008 to honor military men, women and their families with two free
Seats for Soldiers nights. The complete list of all 50 companies is
