MELBOURNE, Fla., Feb. 14 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS), an international communications and information technology company, will celebrate National Engineers Week 2008, February 17 - 23, with events that honor the company's 7,000 engineers and scientists. Celebrations will take place at Harris locations across the U.S. and will recognize technologists within the company's Broadcast Communications, Defense Communications, RF Communications, and Government Communications Systems businesses. "Engineers represent the backbone of a technology-focused company like Harris. I am extremely proud of the daily contributions the technical team makes toward the company's continued success," said R. Kent Buchanan, Corporate Chief Technology Officer and vice president of Engineering for Harris Government Communications Systems. "Engineers Week activities at Harris will recognize the accomplishments of the entire technical staff, with a special focus on our 2008 Technology Recognition Award honorees." As part of the week's activities, awards will be announced for employees that made significant technical and engineering accomplishments during the past year. On Tuesday, February 19, the company will announce the recipients of the annual Technology Recognition Awards, including the Harris Fellow Award -- the company's highest recognition for achievement. Also to be announced on Tuesday are awards for Industry Recognition, Division Cooperation, Product and Process Innovation, and Reuse Innovation. In addition, Golden Quill awards will be presented to employees whose published technical papers made a significant impact to the company. In Brevard County, Florida, where Harris is headquartered, students and faculty members from local public high schools will participate in a special Engineers Week celebration on February 19, at Harris facilities in Palm Bay. Participating students are from Bayside High School's BETA Engineering Academy and from Palm Bay High School's Pirates Academy. Also participating in this celebration will be the local For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) Robotics Competition Team. Students will take part in presentations given by the company's engineering leadership, tour Harris facilities, participate in several hands-on projects, and be paired with Harris engineers for in-depth discussions of engineering career opportunities. "This is a great opportunity to expose students to the engineering field and stimulate interest in engineering as an exciting educational and career path," said Jim Clamons, vice president of Engineering Operations for Harris Government Communications Systems. "By fostering interest in engineering through venues such as this, we hope that young people will consider a college engineering curriculum and, ultimately, consider Harris as a future employer." Nationwide activities during Engineers Week represent the efforts of a coalition of more than 75 engineering, professional, and technical societies and more than 50 corporations and government agencies. Founded in 1951 by the National Society of Professional Engineers, the program is dedicated to ensuring that a diverse and well-educated engineering workforce will continue into the future by increasing understanding of and interest in engineering and technology careers among young students, and by promoting pre-college literacy in math and science. Among the oldest of America's professional outreach efforts, Engineers Week also raises public understanding and appreciation of engineering contributions to society.
