MELBOURNE, Fla., Nov. 8 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- The Manufacturers Association of Florida has named Melbourne, Florida-based Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS) Manufacturer of the Year in the category of companies with more than 500 employees. The announcement was made during an awards dinner as part of Florida's 4th Annual Manufacturers Summit being held November 5-6 at the Orlando Marriott in Lake Mary, Florida. Criteria for selection include a company's commitment to employees, customers and community; dedication to quality; growth during the past two years; and innovative systems and products. Harris, an international communications and information technology company, was selected from among three companies nominated for the award. June Wolfe, president, South Florida Manufacturers Association, presented the award to Harris Corporation's Cindy Kane, director of Corporate Relations and Global Inclusion. Wolfe cited Harris growth in manufacturing employment and the company's long-standing manufacturing education initiatives that provide employees with technical skills as well as basic training in science and mathematics. Harris has 7,000 employees in Brevard County, including more than 1,000 manufacturing personnel. Harris has increased its Brevard County manufacturing employment by approximately 40 percent over the past three years as a result of growth in both its government and commercial businesses. In addition, Harris last year moved certain commercial manufacturing operations from a facility in Toronto, Canada, to government manufacturing facilities in Malabar, Florida. This past year alone, the Florida facility built more than 50,000 complex, high definition video circuit cards for Harris Broadcast Communications Video Products and Distribution group. In October, the company received the Excellence in IT Leadership in Central Florida award from ITFLorida for its innovation and leadership in developing key technologies used in government, defense, and commercial markets. In September, Harris received a 2007 Governor's Business Diversification Award for its development of advanced technology that will help the U.S. Census Bureau conduct an accurate, efficient, and secure census in 2010, potentially saving taxpayers more than $1 billion.
