WASHINGTON, Oct. 29 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- (ATCA, Booth #415) - Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS) is demonstrating solutions to address the Federal Aviation Administration's Next-Generation Air Transportation System, or NextGen, as part of the 52nd Annual Air Traffic Control Association Conference and Exposition being held October 28-31 at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel in Washington, DC. With the theme of "NextGen - Harris is Meeting the Challenge," the company's exhibit will feature approaches to the System-Wide Information Management (SWIM) and the Voice Switch Modernization programs, both key technology enablers to achieving the FAA's vision for the nation's future air transport system. The SWIM demo will feature capabilities of a service-oriented architecture (SOA) that will enhance the National Airspace System (NAS) through a network- centric approach ensuring timely distribution of data. The demo includes prototypes of core services for interface management, messaging, system security and enterprise management as consolidated services within a single enterprise. The Voice Switch demonstration illustrates Harris technology that enables the transformation from the FAA's legacy, point-to-point voice communications architecture to a network-centric architecture capable of supporting emerging, next-generation functions. The demo will feature inter-facility and intra- facility position-to-position communications, legacy air-ground communications, and net-centric air-ground communications. Harris weather information technology also is on display, including a new web-based graphical weather tool. "Harris is highly experienced in the development and application of mission-critical SOA networks, including the all-digital FAA Telecommunications Infrastructure (FTI) network, and we are also the leading provider of weather systems and products to the FAA," said Cheryl Janey, president of Harris Civil Programs. "Our experience in developing these solutions provides a solid foundation for addressing and implementing the critical elements of NextGen, such as real-time access to information, weather status and prediction, and in-air and on-ground proximity information." In addition to the demos in the Harris booth, two technical papers from Harris are published in the Proceedings of 52nd Annual Air Traffic Control Association Conference: "Transforming Air Traffic Management Systems Using SOA-Based Business (Mission) Driven Development Methodology" and "SWIM: A Service Access Point Provides a Single Point-of-Presence for Users, User-based Applications and Services." Harris has a long history of developing and integrating system solutions for the FAA and the global air traffic control network. The company is the prime contractor for the FTI program, which will supply improved network security and communications services to more than 4,000 FAA facilities nationwide, providing the FAA with a more secure, more efficient network that is expected to save $600 million over the life of the program. Other FAA programs developed by Harris include the Weather And Radar Processor, a weather system serving the en-route air traffic control environment; the Voice Switching and Control System, which provides the critical air-to-ground communications links between en-route aircraft and air traffic controllers throughout the continental United States; and the satellite-based Alaskan NAS Interfacility Communications System. The Harris Civil Programs business provides precise, highly reliable, high-speed communications and information networks that improve productivity and information processing for federal agencies of the U.S. government, including the FAA, Census Bureau, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Department of Justice, and Government Printing Office.
