FALLS CHURCH, Va. and MELBOURNE, Fla., Sept. 25 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS), an international communications and information technology company, has been selected for a potential 5-year, $10.7 million follow-on contract to provide technical engineering and support for the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) ground system. Under the new Ground Systems Engineering and Depot Services (GSEDS) II contract, Harris will manage, maintain and repair the system's ground equipment and software. The ground system provides command and control of the satellites, and receives and distributes payload data and real-time telemetry required to communicate the health of the satellites. The GSEDS II contract also includes ground system support for WindSat/Coriolis, a demonstration project to measure wind speed and wind direction of the ocean's surface from space. "Polar-orbiting satellites for the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program, together with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration National Polar-orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite System provide the U.S. with near real-time meteorological and environmental data critical to both military and civilian agencies," said John Heller, vice president of Department of Defense Programs for Harris Information Technology Services.
