MELBOURNE, Fla., May 22 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS) today announced that it has been awarded a one-year, $10 million preliminary design contract for the secure wireless transmission system architecture of the U.S. Army's Warfighter Information Network-Tactical (WIN-T) program, paving the way for low-rate initial production. Harris is a member of the General Dynamics WIN-T team, which also includes Lockheed Martin and BAE SYSTEMS. Total value of the WIN-T program through 2021 is estimated at $10 billion. Value of the transmission system contract for Harris could reach $1 billion through 2021 if all production options are exercised. "We are extremely pleased to be moving into the design phase of this program, which represents the next generation of communications for 21st Century ground forces," said Dan Pearson, president of the Department of Defense Programs business unit of the Harris Government Communications Systems Division. "The successful testing of the Harris transmission system this past November showed that it is an ideal solution for WIN-T, encompassing our proven enabling technologies for secure, wireless, on-the-move communications." WIN-T is the next generation of military tactical communications systems, featuring an integrated framework of standards and protocols that will optimize military battlefield communications. Later this year Harris expects to begin a two-year production program that will finalize a common wireless transmission system architecture for WIN-T and the Future Combat System (FCS). WIN-T and FCS are two of the Army's most critical net-centric modernization programs and both will benefit from a common wireless transmission architecture. WIN-T is scheduled to be fielded later this decade.
