PR Newswire (US)
MELBOURNE, Fla., Jan. 17 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Harris
Corporation (NYSE:HRS), a world leader in geospatial information
and database processing solutions, today announced that the U.S.
Census Bureau has exercised its year- four option for the Master
Address File/Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and
Referencing (MAF/TIGER) Accuracy Improvement Project (MTAIP). The
value of this option is $40 million, bringing the total program
value-to- date to $135 million. Total potential value of the
eight-year MTAIP contract, which was awarded to Harris in 2002, is
estimated at $210 million. "We are very pleased to continue in our
role as the premier supplier of updated geographic information to
the Census Bureau," said Al Dukes, president of the Civil Programs
business unit of Harris Corporation's Government Communications
Systems Division. "This is a nationally important project that will
enable census takers to more precisely conduct their research and
tabulations, and will ultimately result in an advanced,
easy-to-update digital database that accurately reflects all of our
nation's geographic census data." As the program's prime
contractor, Harris is applying its proven image, cartographic and
database processing technologies, as well as decades of expertise
developing integrated information and production management
systems. The MAF will provide a complete and current list of all
addresses and locations where people live or work, covering an
estimated 115 million residences, as well as 60 million businesses
and other structures throughout the United States. The TIGER
portion of the project is a digital database that identifies the
type, location and name of streets, rivers, railroads and other
geographic features, and geospatially defines their relationships
to each other, to the MAF, and to numerous other entities. The
MTAIP project will support the Census Bureau's post-Census 2000
statistical programs, including 2010 Census testing activities,
nationwide implementation of the American Community Survey and the
2010 Census. Harris Government Communications Systems Division
