Sprint Selects Harris TRuepoint(TM) Next-Generation Microwave Radio
Technology to Support Mobile Services Nationwide - Wireless Leader
Names Harris 'Preferred Supplier' for Digital Microwave Radios -
RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C., Feb. 16 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ --
Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS), a leading global provider of
wireless equipment and services, today announced that Sprint
(NYSE:FON), one of the world's largest providers of wireless
communications, has named Harris as its preferred provider of
point-to-point microwave technology. Sprint signed a four-year
agreement to use TRuepoint(TM), Harris' next-generation microwave
radio, as a transport alternative versus leasing wire line
facilities in select markets. Sprint will use TRuepoint, the
industry's first universal platform for point- to-point digital
communications in the cellular backhaul market, as the backbone of
its Sprint PCS wireless network in key U.S. markets nationwide.
Sprint selected Harris' Microwave Communications Division to
deliver the technology required to build out its world-class
wireless communications infrastructure to meet exploding demand for
new mobile services and directly reduce its backhaul costs by
millions of dollars a year. In addition to its backhaul
application, Sprint may use TRuepoint for a range of additional
services, such as disaster recovery, emergency services and
enterprise connectivity. "At Sprint, we're completely focused on
providing unparalleled capacity and service for our customers,"
said Bob Azzi, Sprint's vice president of Network Engineering.
"This means we team with suppliers who know how to work closely
with us and will consistently deliver a superior solution for our
customers. We recognized Harris' ability to deliver a total package
in the TRuepoint product which was cost-efficient, scalable and
flexible." Sprint will use Harris' TRuepoint for Code Division
Multiple Access (CDMA) backhaul and its EV-DO (Evolution Data Only)
services, which include both voice and data applications. Deploying
TRuepoint to backhaul its service traffic to the broader network
enables Sprint to avoid using leased lines (such as T1 or T3
lines), which have both limited capacity and high cost. TRuepoint
allows Sprint to use a single platform throughout its PCS network,
regardless of application traffic volume. This flexibility and
scalability will allow Sprint to add new services and grow its
customer base with limited impact on its wireless infrastructure.
TRuepoint is easy to deploy, with common replacement parts across
the platform, a lower cost to install and a lower total cost of
ownership. "Sprint is recognized around the world as a wireless
leader, so we are pleased that TRuepoint was chosen to power its
advanced mobile network," stated Jayne Leighton, vice president of
North America sales and services, Harris Microwave Communications
Division. "By deploying TRuepoint, Sprint will quickly benefit by
strengthening network capacity and increasing cost- efficiency."
Sprint and Harris have enjoyed a successful relationship on the FAA
Telecommunications Infrastructure (FTI) program. Sprint is a key
provider for long distance connectivity, and also provides specific
multiplexing and routing equipment supporting the objectives of the
5000 site communications program. About TRuepoint TRuepoint(TM)
leads the wireless backhaul industry in terms of both performance
and manageability. Its modular, software-selectable architecture is
able to seamlessly switch between PDH and SDH applications,
enabling service providers to use a universal platform to deliver
multiple applications throughout their networks. Designed
specifically to deliver point-to-point wireless service, TRuepoint
can deliver service from 4 to 180 Mbps at frequencies ranging from
6 to 38 GHz. In addition, service providers can completely manage
TRuepoint deployments remotely, with SNMP-based management. Built
in diagnostics and performance management are also available. About
