Italian oil-and-gas company ENI SpA (ENI.MI) said Thursday that it has started producing gas at the third unit of the offshore Zohr field in Egypt.

The company said the starting up of the unit has increased the installed capacity of the Zohr natural-gas project to 1.2 billion cubic feet per day.

The Zohr field is the largest gas discovery ever made in Egypt and in the Mediterranean Sea, with more than 30 trillion cubic feet of gas in place. It is located within the offshore Shorouk Block.

Eni holds a 60% stake in the Shorouk Block. Russian energy company Rosneft Oil Co. (ROSN.MZ) and the U.K's BP PLC (BP.LN) hold the remaining 30% and 10%, respectively.

The Zohr field began production in December 2017, Eni said.
