seven of eight reporting Asian/pacific markets are up. The Japan
Nikkei 225 is up 1.33%. The China Shanghai Composite is down 1.69%.
Six of nine reporting European markets are down. The Netherlands
AEX General is down 0.32%. The Austria ATX is up 0.75%. The
December futures contract on sweet crude oil is relatively flat in
early trading, down 0.01 from yesterday's close, but remaining just
over $60 per barrel. This comes after losing half a percent in
yesterday's action. DYNAMIC MARKET OPPORTUNITIES The news became
official on Monday: The next chairman of the U.S. Federal Reserve
will be Ben Bernanke, current chairman of the White House Economic
Council. Even though it won't be until January that Bernanke takes
over from the retiring Alan Greenspan, the stock market greeted the
news with cheer, merely confirming the notion that Bernanke was the
best candidate and had been the frontrunner for the job for some
considerable time. His appointment means US monetary policy may
shift towards setting a specific inflation target sometime in the
future - something Bernanke is said to favor. This is a policy the
Bank of England employs and it theoretically helps provide
direction and stability to the markets, rather than constant
volatility over inflation and guesswork over whether it's too high.
With the Fed bankers often hard to read, this move would at least
provide some clarity. On the subject of inflation, the annual UK
inflation rate jumped to 2.5% in September - the fourth straight
monthly increase (by 0.1% from August) and the biggest rise since
January 1997. That's also 0.5% higher than the BoE's target rate of
2%. The bank's forecasts call for the status quo until the end of
the year, with the rate sinking back under the 2% level in 2006.
But by 2007, inflation is projected to rise again. High oil prices
are also taking their toll on Eurozone inflation. September's rate
jumped rather alarmingly from August's 2.2% to 2.6%, thanks to
climbing gasoline costs. This is sure to put more pressure on the
European Central Bank to raise interest rates from the 2% level
where they have remained for over two years. Like the Bank of
England, the ECB's inflation target is also 2%. However logical a
step that might be, it's nevertheless difficult for the ECB to do
while economic growth continues to lag badly. As President
Jean-Claude Trichet said last week, "strong vigilance" is the key
phrase, but it might not be long until "stagflation" creeps into
economic conversation. The overall 25-nation European Union
inflation rate is now 2.5%. Read more analysis from the 247Profits
