Aetna (NYSE: AET) and the Aetna Foundation together awarded $620,000 in community grants and sponsorships in Texas during 2010. The grants were made to organizations addressing a variety of health issues, including obesity among adults and children, racial and ethnic equity in health care, and needed improvements in the integration and coordination of health care services. In addition, grants were made in support of arts and cultural programs, human services and academic organizations, faith-based initiatives and many others.

Grant amounts and recipients include:

In Austin:

  • $15,000 to the Health Start Foundation;
  • $15,000 to the Seton Fund of the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent De Paul, Inc.;
  • $5,000 to Junior Achievement of Central Texas;
  • $5,000 to the Junior League of Austin; and
  • $2,500 to the Austin Community Foundation.

In Dallas/Fort Worth:

  • $50,000 to the Community Council of Greater Dallas;
  • $30,000 to the YWCA of Metropolitan Dallas;
  • $25,000 to The American Heart Association;
  • $20,000 Dallas Methodist Hospitals Foundation, Inc.;
  • $16,000 DFW Business Group on Health;
  • $15,000 American Diabetes Association, Dallas chapter;
  • $15,000 to Big Brothers Big Sisters of North Texas;
  • $15,000 to Greater Dallas Hispanic Chamber of Commerce;
  • $10,000 to Black Tie Dinner, Inc.;
  • $10,000 to the Dallas Foundation;
  • $10,000 to the Dallas Summer Musicals, Inc.;
  • $10,000 to Junior Achievement of Dallas, Inc.;
  • $10,000 to Open Arms Inc.;
  • $7,500 to AIDS Arms Inc.;
  • $7,000 to the Fort Worth Hispanic Chamber of Commerce;
  • $6,000 to The Empowerment Project, Inc.
  • $5,000 to Lone Star Ride Fighting AIDS;
  • $3,900 to the Dallas Women’s Foundation; and
  • $3,600 to Akiba Academy of Dallas;

In El Paso:

  • $10,000 to the El Paso Hispanic Chamber of Commerce

In Houston:

  • $50,000 to the Harris County Hospital District;
  • $25,000 to Gateway to Care;
  • $25,000 to the Houston Area Urban League;
  • $25,000 to the Houston Parks Board;
  • $20,000 Houston Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Inc.;
  • $15,000 to Precinct2gether, Inc.;
  • $10,000 to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Educational Fund;
  • $5,000 to the Houston Ballet Foundation;
  • $5,000 to the National Hispanic Professional Organization, Inc.;
  • $3,500 to the Seven Acres Jewish Senior Care Services;
  • $5,000 to the Lamar Educational Awards Foundation; and
  • $10,000 to the Fort Bend Education Foundation.

In San Antonio:

  • $50,000 to the Witte Museum;
  • $15,000 to the San Antonio Food Bank;
  • $10,000 to the Barshop Jewish Community Center;
  • $10,000 to the King William Association;
  • $5,000 to the American Diabetes Association, San Antonio chapter;
  • $5,000 to the San Antonio Sports Foundation; and
  • $5,000 to the South Central Texas Chapter of Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

“During 2010, Aetna and the Aetna Foundation were pleased to provide $15.6 million in grants and sponsorships to 661 nonprofit organizations nationwide, and to match the generosity of our employees to another 9,492 organizations within our communities,” said Anne C. Beal, M.D., M.P.H., Aetna Foundation president. “We also made significant progress toward our goals of concentrating our grants on specific health issues of national concern, giving nearly $2.35 million to the fight against obesity, $1.24 million to improve racial and ethnic equity in health and health care, and more than $1 million to support better integrated health care in America.”

In addition, Aetna employees, retirees and directors donated an additional $6.9 million through the company's matching gift program, bringing combined giving in communities where Aetna employees and customers live and work to $22.5 million. And, Aetna’s employees donated more than dollars, generously giving nearly 335,000 hours of their personal time and talents in communities nationwide. Since 2003, Aetna employees have logged more than 2.3 million volunteer hours.
