INDIANAPOLIS, Dec. 20 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Indiana University has completed a telecommunications upgrade to offer the university community unified messaging services based on Interactive Intelligence Inc. (NASDAQ:ININ) software called Communite(R). The services will be offered to faculty, staff and potentially students, at the Indiana University Bloomington and Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) campuses. Communite features include unified messaging, voice mail, one-number find-me/follow-me, call-screening and presence management. The university anticipates that several thousand faculty and staff will subscribe to the new services next year. The services will be used in conjunction with the university's existing voice mail system, but is expected to replace that system by the end of next year, according to Mike Lucas, director of telecommunications operations for Indiana University. "Our existing voice mail system is nearing the end of its term, and we need something that will provide more functionality for our highly mobile faculty and staff, while helping us consolidate our systems across both campuses for simplified administration and maintenance," Lucas said. The university evaluated several other unified messaging products, but selected Interactive Intelligence's Communite because of an additional opportunity to provide input to feature and product development through a partnership agreement. IU and Interactive Intelligence worked closely for two years to develop a broader feature set, better scalability and attractive pricing for the Communite product, according to Paul Clegg, manager of voice operations and systems for Indiana University. "Communite's unique server-based, N+1 architecture gives us virtually unlimited scalability without requiring multiple systems," Clegg said. "This, plus its built-in redundancy and broad range of features that can be deployed by simply 'turning on' license keys, makes Communite our obvious choice for a cost-effective, scalable and reliable unified communications system." In addition to voice mail-only service, the university is offering optional unified messaging, which gives users a single repository, or "universal" in-box, where they can receive and process voice mail and e-mails. Another option is find-me/follow-me functionality, which enables users to customize call-handling rules based on personal preferences, such as date, time, and who's calling. The service comes with the ability to listen to e- mail messages via the phone using Communite's telephony user interface. "This new offering is designed to help faculty and staff be more productive by giving them the tools to communicate in real-time where it makes sense-such as the ability to take a high-priority call during a meeting, while screening other calls -- or managing their communications better, whether in the office, across campus, or on the road," Clegg said.
