The Indian stock market in Bombay crashed earlier today, losing 11 percent in the first 20 minutes of trading before being halted by the stock market regulator. Brokers said the market volatility would continue until the new government's policies, especially those on privatization of state-run companies, are made clear. Other Asian markets were weak as well with the Japanese Nikkei finishing the session lower by 3.18 percent; the Hong Kong Hang Seng lost 2.74 percent. The major European markets have all been trading lower so far today as well. Today U.S. markets are set to open lower in the wake of equity market weakness around the world after the head of the Iraqi Governing Council was killed in a suicide car bombing nearing a U.S. checkpoint in Baghdad. This is a major blow to the U.S. effort to stabilize Iraq ahead of the scheduled handover of sovereignty on June 30. Crude oil is continuing to trade above $41 per barrel. After a tumultuous week for the markets last week, Friday's action was mild in comparison. There was no stopping crude oil however, which climbed to a 21-year high of $41.50 per barrel. Obviously, there's a supply/demand crunch due to lower production from OPEC nations, as well as Venezuela and Nigeria. But the ongoing strife in the Middle East seems to be the main driver of the rise at the moment. Combine that with increasing demand from recoveries in the US, Europe and Japan, not to mention China's incredible growth, and you have a recipe for ballooning prices. Given America's need for oil imports amid dwindling reserves, the trade gap unsurprisingly leapt from $42.1 billion in February to $46 billion in March -- a 9.2% monthly increase. That came despite a 2.6% export rise (a record $94.7 billion), as the weak US dollar made US goods cheaper. But imports rose 2% more than exports ($140.7 billion), as oil imports jumped 20% to a record $10.2 billion. The remarkable advance in oil prices is good news for another energy sector: natural gas. At the Taipan Group, Martin Denholm's Southwestern Energy pick is faring extremely well. Originally recommended to readers on September 30, 2003 at $17.36, the stock has performed solidly ever since. Despite some weakness a couple of months ago, Southwestern broke out of its downtrend and is now rising consistently again, as it continues to benefit from the fear-ridden oil market. With a $1.36 gain last Friday (5.6%), it now sits at $25.70 -- a 48% profit. And with the current energy situation, there's no telling how much further the stock could go.
