Fairchild Semiconductor is excited to be the first Green Energy Sponsor of the TD Banknorth Beach to Beacon 10K! Fairchild’s sponsorship enables the race to expand its Green Program, which will include recycling and composting, using eco-friendly portable toilets, recycling shoes and paperless communications for the race.

“It is with a sense of moral obligation that the Beach to Beacon is taking steps to green its operations and appearance – so we are very grateful to Fairchild for enabling us to expand this program this year,” says Joan Benoit Samuelson, the race’s founder. “As one of road racing's most popular events, the Beach to Beacon can showcase measures that can be taken at running events and in people’s daily lives that will reduce Green House Gas emissions.”

Reducing the global carbon footprint and wasted energy is a major concern around the world. The use of electronic devices has increased as more people are now using electronic devices at home, work and everywhere they go. Fairchild designs and develops integrated circuits that enable longer talk time on cell phones, more efficient motors in dozens of end applications, longer battery life in computers and more efficient lights. For instance,

Using 20 million LED light bulbs with Fairchild components could eliminate three and one half 300 MW power plants.

Fairchild is also engaged in many initiatives at our sites world wide to reduce wasted energy and our global carbon footprint. Some examples are:

  • Installed variable speed motors at manufacturing facilities.
  • Shut off equipment when not in use.
  • Put timers on lights.
  • Utilize on-demand heating and cooling systems.
  • Modified temperature sensors in office buildings.
  • Installed sky lights.
  • Installed CFL/LFL light bulbs in buildings.
  • Using 1,000 blocks of 100kwh per month of wind energy at one facility.
  • Replaced and consolidated servers as their serviceable life ended with newer, smaller and more energy-efficient servers.
  • Recycled 43,338 tons of non-hazardous material 2000 through 2008.

Fairchild has over 50,000 customers worldwide with a corporate headquarters and one of their main manufacturing facilities located in South Portland, Maine – close to the picturesque race course in Cape Elizabeth. Fairchild’s South Portland initiatives to reduce our global footprint include:

  • Purchasing 6 MWs of hydro power.
  • Converted from #2 fuel oil to natural gas.
  • Water conservation and storm water discharge management.
  • Continuously monitor facilities and equipment – resulting in 15 to 20 percent energy savings.
  • Utilize natural ambient cooling systems in winter to run chiller equipment – reducing power load by 20 percent.
  • Invested $1M in energy efficient pumps – resulting in 15 percent energy reduction per pump.
  • Installed high efficiency bulbs in over 80 percent of the factory.
  • Equipped office spaces with motion sensors.

Participants and spectators who visit Fairchild Semiconductor at the Beach to Beacon 10K on August 1, will have the opportunity to charge their cell phones by riding a bicycle, see the integrated circuit components of a CFL and LED lighting and other electronic demonstrations. Fairchild is a world leader in designing innovative solutions to meet the challenges of our power-hungry world.

About the TD Banknorth Beach to Beacon 10K: Saturday, August 1, 2009 marks the 12th annual Beach to Beacon 10K. The course takes place in Cape Elizabeth, Maine beginning at Crescent Beach along Route 77 and ending 6.2 miles later in Fort Williams at the stunning Portland Head lighthouse. Joan Benoit Samuelson, a native of Cape Elizabeth and winner of Olympic gold in the first women’s marathon in 1984, founded the race in 1998 as a way to support Maine children by creating a world-class event for the state. Every year the race provides a cash donation of $30,000 to different children’s charity. This year's race beneficiary is Maine Handicapped Skiing, www.skimhs.org.
