This power supply reference design shows how the combination of two state-of-the-art products, the award-winning Green FPS� power switch (FSFR2100) and Power-SPM� (FFP06R001) in modular SIP-9 packages, creates an elegant and efficient design. With efficiency at more than 92 percent, this design exceeds the 87 percent efficiency target proposed by the Energy Using Products directive (EuP). Fairchild�s system-power experts incorporated power modules for both the primary and the secondary side of the power supply for improved performance, ease-of-design and a reduction in overall system cost. These highly efficient power modules reduce energy costs and reduce the size of the heat sinks needed, lowering the overall system costs. The smaller module size, together with the reduction in individual components necessary in the design, lowers logistic costs and reduces mounting costs by over 50 percent, offering a 25 percent space savings. For example, five components per channel can be eliminated on the secondary side. On the primary side, efficiency is improved by up to ten percent compared to conventional hard-switch converter topologies.
