Dr. Izak Bencuya, Fairchild Semiconductors (NYSE: FCS) executive
vice president and general manager of the Functional Power Group,
recently presented the role power semiconductors play in maximizing
energy efficiency at the 19th International Symposium on Power
Semiconductor Devices and Integrated Circuits (ISPSD'07). This is
an exciting time for power semiconductor manufacturers. We are at
the forefront of innovation in the area of power efficiency, said
Dr. Bencuya. Integrated solutions offering more efficient power in
smaller, faster devices are increasingly becoming a viable
alternative to non-integrated solutions. Stimulating challenges are
on the horizon, and as The Power Franchise, Fairchild is focused
on meeting this need with energy-efficient components for use in
electronic applications such as cell phones, DVD players, flat
panel displays, notebook computers, printers, cameras, TVs, home
appliances, power adaptors, power supplies, lighting, motor control
and automotive electronics. Energy efficiency is a major concern
worldwide and world consumption of energy is expected to increase
57 percent between 2002 and 2025. The use of electronics in the
home has increased, and more homes are now using electronics. Power
required for big routers to manage internet usage has increased by
10 times in the last decade. Desktop computers, graphic processors
(GPU) and large memories demand more power, and data centers or
internet farms have power requirements similar to small towns.
Handheld electronic devices are everywhere and automobiles now
contain a significant amount of electronics, all of which increase
the demand for power, (Source: EIA). Wasted energy, or power, can
be found everywhere, from lighting to automobiles, and power
supplies to electrical conversion. Optimizing the use of power in
todays electronic products needs to be a key initiative for power
semiconductor manufacturers, continued Bencuya. It is incumbent
on us to provide innovative designs yielding improved performance,
reliability and reduced system costs. Providing highly integrated
products in thermally advanced packaging offers increased power
density and efficiency, and brings value to customers. Fairchild
designs and develops products to efficiently optimize system power.
One example of how Fairchilds products offer dramatic reduction of
power consumption is in power supplies. Power supplies waste three
to four percent of the total United States (U.S.) electricity, and
appliances in stand-by mode consume nearly five percent of U. S.
residential electricity per year. An average television uses
32.94kW of standby power annually. Using Fairchilds Green FPS
products reduces that usage to 7.3kW annually. This is a savings of
25.64 kW for each television per year. If every TV sold worldwide
in 2004 realized the 25.64 kW power reduction, it would be a
savings of approximately 4.28 TW/year, enough to power millions of
households. Government initiatives such as the 1W initiative, and
other regulations worldwide, are driving energy conservation
improvements. However, power semiconductor manufacturers must
continue to develop integrated, power-efficient products to meet
this energy challenge, Bencuya concluded. About Fairchild
Semiconductor: Fairchild Semiconductor (NYSE: FCS) is the leading
global supplier of high-performance power products critical to
todays leading electronic applications in the computing,
communications, consumer, industrial and automotive segments.
Fairchild, The Power Franchise, offers the industrys broadest
portfolio of power discrete and analog products that optimize
system power as well as leading signal path components that
complement them. In 2007, Fairchild celebrates its 50/10
anniversary, commemorating 10 years as a new company and 50 years
in the industry. Known as the Father of Silicon Valley, Fairchild
developed the planar transistor in 1958 and with it a new
industry. Today, Fairchild is an application-driven, solution-based
product supplier providing online design tools and design centers
worldwide as part of its comprehensive Global Power Resource.
