Fairchild Semiconductor's 2nd Generation Video Switch Matrix Offers Highly Integrated Switching Solution for Video Applications

Fairchild Semiconductor (NYSE:FCS) introduces the FMS6502, an
8-input, 6-output video switch matrix that offers industry-leading
cost effectiveness and space savings in consumer and industrial
video applications such as automotive in-cabin entertainment
systems, HDTVs, flat panel displays and A/V receivers. The FMS6502
offers more functionality than comparable crosspoint video switch
matrices by integrating analog switch capability, input clamps,
bias circuitry and cable drivers into a single device. Consuming
approximately half the board space of discrete solutions, the
FMS6502 dramatically reduces part count while simplifying designs.
The second-generation FMS6502 offers the same high level of
integration as Fairchilds previous-generation video switch matrix
technology while providing enhanced flexibility. Fairchilds
FMS6502 eight-by-six video switch matrix is the most highly
integrated switching solution on the market and is tailored to fit
designers specific configuration needs and cost targets, said
Bill Boldt, Fairchilds senior marketing manager for Signal Path
Products. The new FMS6502 builds upon Fairchilds popular,
previously released FMS6501 twelve-by-nine matrix by offering a
cost-effective solution for applications where a fewer inputs and
outputs are desirable. The FMS6502 reinforces our leadership
position in providing low cost, highly integrated video products.
The FMS6502 accommodates standard-definition (SD),
enhanced-definition (ED) and 1080i/1080p high-definition (HD) video
signals and offers selectable 0 and 6dB integrated cable drivers
capable of driving dual video loads. The lowest power consuming
device of its kind, the FMS6502 further optimizes system power by
turning off unused outputs. The FMS6502s inputs offer a sync-tip
clamp or bias option that allows the device to handle video signals
with or without sync. The sync-tip clamp option sets the output
sync tip level to 300mV (video with sync) and the bias option
internally biases the inputs to center signals without sync (Y, Pb,
Pr) to 1.25V. Key features and benefits of the FMS6502 include:
Switches eight inputs to any of six outputs for unmatched design
flexibility. Accommodates SD, ED, and 1080i/1080p HD video
signals. I2C compatible digital interface for ease of use.
Drives 75 Ohm cables directly without the need for external
components. Selectable 0 and 6dB integrated cable drivers
increase design flexibility. Inputs with sync-tip clamp or bias
option handle video signals with or without sync. Ability to
disable unused outputs lowers power dissipation. Integration
dramatically reduces board space, lowers parts count and diminishes
inventory costs, while enabling faster design time and quicker time
to market. Easy-to-use addressing scheme simplifies cascading of
multiple FMS6502 devices to address larger switching matrices. The
FMS6502 is available in a compact TSSOP-24 lead (Pb)-free package
that meets or exceeds the requirements of the joint IPC/JEDEC
standard J-STD-020C and is compliant with European Union
regulations now in effect. Price (each, 1000 pcs): US$ 1.44
