Cypress Semiconductor Corp. (Nasdaq: CY) today announced that LG Electronics has selected its PSoC®-based CapSense® solution to implement an array of control functions in the “LE” line of LED-backlit, high-definition digital televisions.

LG’s design team selected the CapSense solution for its ability to integrate multiple functions in a single chip, as well as for its superior noise immunity. A single CapSense chip controls touch buttons and over 20 LEDs. In addition, it fully configures the LED effects when buttons are activated and controls a buzzer on the TV. The PSoC-based CapSense solution enables LG to dynamically reconfigure the capacitive sensing hardware to deal with various system noise issues and provide best in class sensing. No other capacitive sensing solution available today provides this level of noise immunity, which helped LG quickly and easily pass stringent EMS (Electromagnetic Susceptibility) requirements that far exceed global standards.

The CapSense-equipped LG models include 42- to 60-inch TVs in the LE530, LE540, LE550, LE650 and LE750 lines. This new line of TV’s from LG lets users tap into the future of online connectivity with broadband TV, Wireless HD that gets rid of messy wires and a host of other features that bring the user experience to the next level. In addition, the overall look and feel has been optimized (including replacing mechanical buttons with CapSense) to enhance viewing pleasure.

“The LE models take TV watching to the next level, offering a brilliant picture and new features designed to enhance the viewing experience,” said Dong Myeong Kim, chief research engineer for LG Electronics. “The ability of CapSense to implement so many features in a single chip allowed us to streamline the design. In addition, the Cypress noise-immunity algorithms and expert technical support enabled us to pass stringent LG noise tests in just one day.”

“This design win showcases the many benefits that CapSense brings to customers, especially in optimizing the overall user experience that has become key for product differentiation,” said Dhwani Vyas, vice president of Cypress’s User Interface Business Unit. “The LG televisions are outstanding products and we’re proud to have helped bring them to market quickly and cost-effectively with the right look and feel.”

About CapSense

Cypress's CapSense touch-sensing solution has replaced 3.5 billion mechanical buttons in mobile handsets, laptops, consumer electronics, white goods, automotive applications, and virtually any system that has a mechanical button or switch, making Cypress the industry touch-sensing leader. The CapSense portfolio, the industry's broadest and most integrated, enhances industrial design and reliability with the most noise-immune and water tolerant capacitive touch-sensing interfaces, including proximity sensing where direct touch is not required. CapSense proximity sensing, with its industry-leading detection range up to 25 cm, provides power savings by activating an interface only when needed while further enhancing industrial designs by only exposing interfaces when necessary. Based on the PSoC programmable system-on-chip architecture and the PSoC Designer™ Embedded-System Design Tool, users complete CapSense designs quickly and easily using pre-configured and verified "user modules" and real-time sensor tuning and monitoring. PSoC -- Because Change Happens

PSoC devices employ a highly configurable system-on-chip architecture for embedded control design, offering a flash-based equivalent of a field-programmable ASIC without lead-time or NRE penalties. PSoC devices integrate configurable analog and digital circuits, controlled by an on-chip microcontroller, providing both enhanced design revision capability and component count savings. A single PSoC device can integrate as many as 100 peripheral functions saving customers design time, board space and power consumption while improving system quality and reducing system cost.
