Cypress Semiconductor Corp. (NASDAQ:CY) today announced that Electronics Weekly magazine has selected Cypress’s PowerPSoC® family of integrated embedded power controllers as the winner of the 2009 Elektra Award for “Power Systems Product of the Year.” The family offers the industry’s first single-chip solution to control and drive high-power LEDs. The devices integrate four constant-current regulators and four 32V MOSFETs with Cypress’s PSoC® programmable system-on-chip, which includes programmable analog and digital blocks, a microcontroller, and memory.

This unprecedented level of integration provides customers with a single-chip solution for high-quality LED-based lighting products and extends into other embedded applications such as white goods and industrial control. The result is end systems with fewer components, faster design cycles, lower power consumption and higher reliability. More information on the PowerPSoC family is available at www.cypress.com/go/pr/PowerPSoC.

An independent panel of judges selected the Elektra Award winners, which were announced in London on December 1. Now in its seventh year, the categories of the Elektra Awards have been enhanced to reflect the strength of innovation in semiconductor design and the growing importance of applications such as LED lighting and renewable energy technologies. “We are pleased to add the prestigious Elektra Award to the growing list of accolades earned by the PowerPSoC family,” said Curtis Davis, vice president of Cypress’s PowerPSoC Division. “PowerPSoC customers are also recognizing the unmatched flexibility of the solution’s architecture and the simplified design and reduced BOM costs it enables.”

About PowerPSoC

The PowerPSoC family integrates up to four independently operated 32V / 1A MOSFETs that offer the ability to drive high power LEDs up to 1A. The devices include up to four programmable hysteretic controllers to provide controlled current output and up to four low-side gate drivers with programmable drive strength to support voltages above 32V with external MOSFETs. Up to 2MHz switching frequency allows use of smaller, less expensive inductors. The family offers floating load buck, floating load buck-boost, and boost converter topologies that enable flexibility for the different voltage requirements of various applications. An auxiliary power regulator allows a PowerPSoC chip to operate up to 32V from a single power supply. The devices also offer 16-bit dimming for lighting applications that require high-resolution dimming.

The companion software for PowerPSoC, the PSoC Designer™ development tool, enables designers to quickly and efficiently program the controllers for different lighting and power options. It also allows changes late in the design cycle without having to change the circuit board layout. More information about PSoC products and design tools is available at www.cypress.com/psoc.
