Captivating images from world-renowned photographers and easy-to-digest instructions on how to approach the digital medium combine to make Capture: Digital Photography Essentials, a new book by Brooks Institute faculty Glenn Rand and Christopher Broughton and Brooks Institute MFA alumnus Amanda Quintenz-Fielder, a valuable learning tool for photography students and serious amateurs.

Unlike many digital photography books that emphasize photo imaging and manipulation programs such as Photoshop, Capture focuses on the fundamentals: what readers need to master photography in the digital environment. The book instructs readers how to use their digital cameras to produce superior photography. “It is about taking pictures, not manipulating pictures,” says Rand. “It is about seeing the world and capturing what you see.”

Taking a basic to intermediate approach to learning photography, Capture is chock full of easy-to-understand instruction and information that camera users cannot get from the manual that comes with the camera. While a manual can tell users how to set the exposure, Capture instructs them on how to maximize or optimize exposure. In fact, the book dedicates four chapters to exposure, with two chapters on basic exposure and digital exposure and two other chapters covering a zone system approach to digital photography and HDRI for small cameras.

While Capture is clearly not about digital manipulation, it still recognizes the important role of technology in high-quality digital photography. For instance, the chapters on file types and asset management address digital-age photo storage issues. “That is important, just as it was important when you were using film to know how to store a negative properly,” says Rand.

In addition to the knowledge-packed text, the book is, quite simply, stunning. While many photo books depict only the works of the authors, the majority of the images in Capture are from photographers from around the United States, South America and Europe, including Julieanne Kost, Douglas Kirkland, Douglas Dubler, Harald Mante and many others. Utilizing a wide range of photographers—who create everything from fine art to photo journalism—allowed the authors to highlight a variety of approaches to photography.

“The images in the book are dynamic, and they are not from a single point of view. It’s not one person saying, ‘This is how I make photographs.’ Rather, this is how a lot of people make photographs,” says Rand.
