The SWIGZ.COM Pro Racing team has set a top speed record for an
electric motorcycle of 190.6 mph in the Mojave Mile Shootout
powered by a UQM Technologies, Inc. (NYSE Amex: UQM)
electric propulsion system. The previous top speed achieved by
other electric motorcycles at different events was in the 170 mph
range.
“UQM congratulates Chip Yates and all of the SWIGZ.COM Pro
Racing team on this record-setting achievement with his electric
superbike,” said Eric Ridenour, President and Chief Executive
Officer of UQM Technologies. “We are very happy that our electric
propulsion system played a key role in Yate’s performance and he
continues to demonstrate that electric drive can deliver unexpected
high performance.”
The SWIGZ.COM Pro Racing Electric motorcycle was designed and
ridden by extreme electric vehicle designer and professional
motorcycle racer Chip Yates.
“This run should go a long way towards our goal of demonstrating
that electric vehicles can lay down extreme performance and compete
directly against gasoline powered vehicles if properly designed and
executed,” said Yates.
Some of the team’s accomplishments with the electric superbike
include:
- Making its global racing debut in
January of this year, the SWIGZ superbike racing team finished an
astonishing third place at Auto Club Speedway in California in the
premier WERA Heavyweight Twins Superbike category with a
UQM-powered, all-electric entry, after starting the race on the
third row
- The team then went one better and
finished second in the WERA Heavyweight Twins Superstock division
of the race
- The UQM-powered electric superbike
posted the fastest lap of the race at 1:39.792
- During the race, the UQM-powered,
all-electric SWIGZ superbike reached a top speed of 158 mph,
despite having only six laps of pre-race testing
Yates and his team are now adapting the superbike’s UQM electric
powertrain to optimize its performance for the Pikes Peak
International Hill Climb (www.ppihc.com), which will take place on
June 26, 2011. The team has already made news in this competition
by entering the most powerful electric motorcycle ever at 240
horsepower.
