UQM Technologies, Inc. (NYSE Amex: UQM) electric drive
system will power the Rolls-Royce 102EX, Electric-powered Phantom
which was introduced at the Geneva Motor Show on March 1, 2011.
“Our electric motors deliver high-power output in a small
package, requiring minimal space in the vehicle – a crucial
requirement in the Rolls-Royce project,” said Eric Ridenour,
President and CEO of UQM Technologies. “Additionally, the quality,
performance and craftsmanship of our PowerPhase electric propulsion
system make it a great match for the ultra-luxury Rolls-Royce
brand.”
According to Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, the 102EX will tour during
2011, serving as a test bed to gather data that will be crucial for
the company to base future decisions on alternative drivetrains.
Through test drives, owners will be given the opportunity to
experience an alternative drivetrain technology and give feedback
on their experiences, thoughts and concerns directly to
Rolls-Royce.
The 102EX uses two 145kW PowerPhase electric propulsion systems
to deliver the performance required by Rolls-Royce. Combined, the
electric motors produce 388 horsepower and 590 ft-lbs of
torque.
“The selection of our PowerPhase systems by Rolls-Royce
reinforces our ability to build and provide electric-propulsion
solutions for a wide variety of vehicle platforms,” added Ridenour.
“Our systems are used in a variety of vehicles from a motorcycle up
to a transit bus, and now in an ultra-luxury car.”
The Rolls-Royce electric 102EX Phantom joins international auto
makers Saab and Audi, that have selected UQM Technologies electric
propulsion systems to power their pre-production test fleets.
The company has 40,000 units of annual production capacity for
its PowerPhase electric propulsion systems to support the
commercial launch of CODA Automotive and other customer vehicles
powered by its electric propulsion systems. UQM is also supplying
Proterra Inc. with 150kW PowerPhase electric propulsion systems for
its electric and hybrid electric, composite transit buses.
