Siemens Energy AG has begun construction of a grid stabilization facility in south Wales, the company said Wednesday.

The project, completion of which was awarded to Siemens Energy by power developer Welsh Power, will be operational in autumn 2021, the German energy company said.

Siemens Energy's rotating grid stabilization technology, which is being installed at the site, allows to manage grid stability in order for the U.K. to strive for a net-zero-carbon energy system, the company said.

As part of its contract with Welsh Power, Siemens Energy is in charge of design, manufacture, installation and commission at the South Wales site, which is located in Rassau, Ebbw Vale.

In addition to providing the stabilization technology--which consists of a synchronous condenser and flywheel--Siemens Energy is also in charge of providing control and operating systems, a cooling system, auxiliary equipment, and of connecting the site to the grid, it said.

Stabilization of the grid via a synchronous condenser allows for use of more renewable power on the network, Siemens Energy said.
