Roche AG has acquired Stratos Genomics for an undisclosed amount to help advance its DNA sequencing development, the Swiss health-care giant said Friday.

Stratos Genomics is a Seattle-based company and owner of Sequencing by Expansion, a technology that will assist Roche in further developing its nanopore sequencer, which aims to combine electronic and biological components to sequence DNA for faster and cheaper clinical diagnostic testing.

"With our combined expertise and complementary technologies, we are well-positioned to open the path to deliver scalable, high-performance sequencing to clinicians and researchers," said Mark Kokoris, president and chief executive at Stratos Genomics.

Stratos Genomics will continue to work in Seattle, Washington.

Financial details of the agreement weren't disclosed.
