Anglo American PLC on Tuesday reported higher copper, iron-ore and platinum group metals production for the second quarter, as operations benefited from the lower impact of Covid-19 lockdowns compared with the same period of 2020.

The miner produced 15.7 million metric tons of iron ore in the three months to June, up 6% from a year earlier.

Copper output increased 2% to 170,000 tons due to strong plant performance at Los Bronces in Chile.

Platinum group metals production surged 59% to 1.06 million ounces driven by higher Mogalakwena production in South Africa and lower restrictions.

Diamonds production more than doubled, metallurgical coal output was down 25% and thermal coal production slipped 1%. Nickel output fell 2% and manganese ore production increased 18%.

"We have generally maintained operating levels at approximately 95% of normal capacity and, as a consequence, production increased by 20% compared to Q2 of last year," Chief Executive Mark Cutifani said.
