Uniper SE said Thursday that it is exploring a large-scale project to supply sustainable aviation fuels in Germany through a consortium with Airbus SE, Siemens Energy AG and a unit of Sasol Ltd.

The German energy company said the aim is to produce SAF from green hydrogen and processed biogenic carbon dioxide in Hamburg, a key location for the civil aviation industry. As part of the project, the consortium aims to build a large-scale commercial plant in the region for the production of hydrogen from renewable sources.

The SAF would be CO2-neutral, power-to-liquid kerosene, which is already certified for use as aviation fuel. The required capacity would be of at least 10,000 tonnes of green kerosene annually in the first expansion stage starting from 2026, Uniper said.
