Electric vehicle company Nikola Corp. and energy infrastructure company TC Energy Corp. will collaborate on co-developing, constructing, operating and owning large-scale hydrogen production facilities in the U.S. and Canada.

Nikola's Energy business unit and TC Energy are working on projects to establish the infrastructure required for hydrogen at scale and seek to accelerate the adoption of heavy-duty zero-emission fuel cell electric vehicles and hydrogen across industrial sectors.

The collaboration aims to establish hubs producing 150 tons or more of hydrogen per day near highly traveled truck corridors to serve Nikola's planned need for hydrogen to fuel its Class 8 fuel cell electric vehicles within the next five years.

TC Energy has pipeline, storage and power assets that potentially can be used to lower the cost and increase the speed of delivery of these hydrogen production hubs, Nikola said.

Nikola shares were up 2.8% to $10.40 in premarket trade.
