North American rail traffic rose 4.6% last week, data from the Association of American Railroads showed.

Carload volume rose 6.7% for the week ended July 24 on 12 reporting U.S., Canadian and Mexican railroads, while intermodal traffic rose 2.7%, the trade group said Wednesday.

In the week ended July 17, North American rail traffic also rose 4.6%. For the first 29 weeks of the year, North American rail traffic is up 11.2%.

The AAR said U.S. rail traffic rose 4.6% last week, with carloads up 7.1% and the volume of intermodal containers and trailers up 2.6%. U.S. rail traffic is up 12.7% for the first 29 weeks of the year.

Canadian rail traffic rose 2.1% last week amid a 3.3% rise in carloads and a 0.8% increase in intermodal units. Canadian rail traffic is up 7.4% for the first 29 weeks of the year.

Mexican rail traffic jumped 15.2% last week, with carloads up 15.7% and intermodal units up 14.4%. Mexican rail traffic is up 6.4% for the year to date, the AAR said.
