The number of TEUs carried for the year ended December 31, 2021 increased 640 thousand TEUs, or 22.5%, from 2,841 thousand TEUs for the year ended December 31, 2020 to 3,481 thousand TEUs for the year ended December 31, 2021, primarily driven by changes in the operated lines’ structure and capacity in the Pacific and Intra Asia trades, which mainly included new express services in the Pacific South West and Asia – Australia sub-trades, along with an increase in vessel utilization due to strong consumers’ demand. The above was partially offset by additional blank voyages across all sub-trades and mainly in the Pacific, related to the port congestions. The average freight rate per TEU carried for the year ended December 31, 2021, increased by $1,557, or 126.7%, from $1,229 for the year ended December 31, 2020, to $2,786 for the year ended December 31, 2021.

TEUs carried in the Pacific geographic trade zone for the year ended December 31, 2021 increased 250 thousand, or 22.2%, from 1,126 thousand for the year ended December 31, 2020 to 1,376 thousand for the year ended December 31, 2021, primarily driven by the new express services in the Pacific South West sub-trade, new service in the all-Water sub-trade, increased allocation and capacity in lines operated with partners and an increase in vessel utilization due to strong consumers’ demand, partially offset by additional blank voyages. The average freight rate per TEU carried in the Pacific geographic trade zone for the year ended December 31, 2021, increased $2,182, or 132.0%, from $1,653 for the year ended December 31, 2020, to $3,835 for the year ended December 31, 2021.
TEUs carried in the Cross-Suez geographic trade zone for the year ended December 31, 2021, increased 2 thousand, or 0.6%, from 343 thousand for the year ended December 31, 2020, to 345 thousand for the year ended December 31, 2021. The average freight rate per TEU carried in the Cross-Suez geographic trade zone for the year ended December 31, 2021, increased $2,494, or 217.8%, from $1,145 for the year ended December 31, 2020, to $3,639 for the year ended December 31, 2021.
TEUs carried in the Atlantic-Europe geographic trade zone for the year ended December 31, 2021, increased 26 thousand, or 4.4%, from 593 thousand for the year ended December 31, 2020 to 619 thousand for the year ended December 31, 2021, primarily driven by a new service in the East Mediterranean & Black Sea sub-trade and two new monthly services from Med to US and an increase in vessel utilization due to strong consumers’ demands, partially offset by additional blank voyages. The average freight rate per TEU carried in the Atlantic-Europe geographic trade zone for the year ended December 31, 2021, increased $577, or 59.2%, from $974 for the year ended December 31, 2020, to $1,551 for the fiscal year ended December 31, 2021.
TEUs carried in the Intra-Asia geographic trade zone for the year ended December 31, 2021, increased 332 thousand, or 54.7%, from 607 thousand for the year ended December 31, 2020, to 939 thousand for the year ended December 31, 2021, primarily driven by new lines across all sub-trades, mainly the full year impact of two express services connecting China with the major ports of Australia, partially offset by additional blank voyages. The average freight rate per TEU carried in the Intra-Asia geographic trade zone for the year ended December 31, 2021, increased $1,079, or 144.4%, from $747 for the year ended December 31, 2020 to $1,826 for the year ended December 31, 2021.
TEUs carried in the Latin America geographic trade zone for the year ended December 31, 2021, increased 30 thousand or 17.4%, from 172 thousand for the year ended December 31, 2020, to 202 thousand for the year ended December 31, 2021, primarily driven by a new service between Florida and Mexico and deploying extra loaders between Asia and South America. The average freight rate per TEU carried in the Latin America geographic trade zone for the year ended December 31, 2021, increased $1,220, or 100.8%, from $1,210 for the year ended December 31, 2020, to $2,430 for the year ended December 31, 2021.
