Rail transportation company Norfolk Southern Corp. said Thursday it is expanding its conductor trainee incentive program to three new locations.

Trainees in Bellevue, Ohio, Elkhart, Indiana, and Fort Wayne, Indiana, are now eligible to receive starting bonuses of $5,000, the company said. A career in conducting for the company offers a minimum of $52,000 in annual pay, it said.

Other priority locations for Norfolk Southern include Birmingham and Cincinnati.

Guaranteed minimum earnings increase over four years of service to about $63,500, Norfolk Southern said.

"One of the clear benefits of our industry is the opportunity for future advancement and the potential for increased earnings," said Brad Dodd, director of talent acquisition at Norfolk Southern. "For example, a conductor can be promoted to a locomotive engineer position that has guaranteed minimum annual pay of approximately $94,000, along with benefits. Many of our engineers earn more than $100,000 with the work opportunities at their locations."

The company's shares were trading at $263.05, up 0.9% on Thursday.
