SSE PLC has lost its appeal against Ofgem's decision to implement new rules for assessing how electricity generators pay for the use of the transmission network, the U.K. Competition and Markets Authority said Tuesday.

The CMA has ruled energy regulator Ofgem wasn't wrong to have approved the changes to industry charging rules.

SSE, which is one of the largest electricity generation companies in the U.K., had argued the changes could lead to transmission charges being outside the range allowed under the relevant law.

However the CMA said the changes made a breach of the law in fiscal 2022 much less likely. In addition, Ofgem recognized the changes were imperfect and made clear it expected system operator National Grid to propose further changes to take effect by April 1, 2022, the CMA noted.
