GE Healthcare said Thursday it is stepping up production and hiring to help fill higher demand for medical equipment during the Covid-19 outbreak.

The Chicago-based company said it is adding new manufacturing lines for ventilators--used to treat lung problems that some patients develop while suffering from the viral disease--as well as boosting production for diagnostic devices.

GE said it will also hire new workers to deal with the demand surge.

"As the global pandemic evolves, there is unprecedented demand for medical equipment, including ventilators," Chief Executive Kieran Murphy said. "We continue to explore all options to support this increased need."
