Putting CSR Strategy to Work as World Responds
to Pandemic
FedEx Corp. (NYSE: FDX) announced today the online release of
its 2020 Global Citizenship Report (GCR), which details the
company’s corporate social responsibility strategies, goals,
programs and progress. The 12th annual report includes updates on
the progress of the company’s citizenship goals in FY19, which
ended May 31, 2019, and focuses on how the company connects the
global economy through innovative technologies, pioneering
approaches and customer-facing solutions. The release comes as the
company continues to use its global network to keep commerce and
aid moving during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“This report demonstrates how we put our CSR strategy to work
using our global reach and purpose-driven mission,” said Mitch
Jackson, chief sustainability officer, FedEx Corp. “It shows how we
connect the world responsibly and resourcefully and is an example
of how we will continue to do that while providing support on a
global scale during these unprecedented times.”
Highlights from this year’s report include:
Economy: Multiplying Growth for our Business &
Society
FedEx believes a connected world is a better world that allows
the company to add value to customers and communities. With
networks that link more than 99% of the world’s gross domestic
product, FedEx connects people with goods, services and ideas in
ways that strengthen the company’s business, while creating
opportunities and positive impacts for society.
As e-commerce continues to grow, FedEx is exploring alternative
ways to deliver. For example, RoxoTM the FedEx SameDay BotTM holds
promise for safely delivering smaller shipments to customers’ homes
and businesses, and is entirely electric — using only batteries
that produce zero localized emissions. In 2019, FedEx also marked
the first scheduled residential delivery via drone in the U.S.
through the company’s collaboration with Wing, again, with zero
emissions.
FedEx also expanded the company’s retail networks to give
customers more options. By the end of 2020, customers will be able
to pick up or drop off FedEx packages at approximately 94,000 sites
globally, including various grocery stores and pharmacies, FedEx
Office locations and FedEx drop boxes.
People: Multiplying Potential
More than 475,000 team members power the global FedEx network
and they are central to the company’s success. That’s why FedEx
strives to provide a safe and inclusive workplace, development
opportunities that enable people to realize their full potential,
and innovative benefits that help team members maintain health and
well-being.
In FY19 the company continued investing in its people, providing
an average of 38 hours of formal training per employee and
contributing a total of $15 million in tuition assistance to more
than 7,500 employees. FedEx also expanded Learning inspired by
FedEx (LiFE), a program developed by FedEx Express and the
University of Memphis which provides select hub team members the
opportunity to earn a tuition-free degree online.
FedEx aims to source the most innovative safety technology for
its vehicle fleet. Ninety-eight percent of FedEx Freight tractors
and box trucks now include roll stability, forward collision
mitigation systems, and lane departure technology. FedEx Express,
FedEx Freight, and FedEx Ground use video event data recorder
(VEDR) technology to improve safety for drivers and others on the
road.
Environment: Multiplying Efficiencies
FedEx continued to make progress toward its environmental goals
using the company’s Reduce, Replace, Revolutionize strategy. The
strategy focuses on reducing impacts and improving productivity
while creating new, more efficient and innovative solutions.
Overall, these efforts have contributed to a 40% reduction in CO2
emissions intensity on a revenue basis across the enterprise since
FY09, a period in which revenue grew by 96%. FedEx avoided more
than 3 million metric tons of CO2e emissions as a result of our
enterprise wide fuel and energy saving initiatives. That’s
equivalent to the carbon sequestered by more than 4 million acres
of U.S. forests in a single year.
FedEx continued to remain on the cutting edge of fleet
electrification. The company announced in early 2020 that it
started construction on electronic DC (direct current) charging
stations through an agreement with Chanje Energy Inc. The company
plans to electrify 42 FedEx stations in California, making it one
of the largest deployments of integrated charging infrastructure by
a single commercial fleet to date. In addition, FedEx added 390
electric vehicles in FY19, bringing the total number of EVs to
almost 3,000.
In FY19, FedEx Express and Boeing completed innovative formation
flight tests that confirm the potential for reducing fuel
consumption by flying in the wingtip vortex of the lead aircraft,
also known as “wake surfing.” It could potentially reduce fuel
consumption by up to 10%.
Multiplying Good
FedEx believes investing in communities has the potential to
multiply opportunities around the world. FedEx Cares, the company’s
global community engagement program, is one-way team members live
out the company’s purpose of connecting people and
possibilities.
In 2019, FedEx surpassed its citizenship goal set in 2016, to
invest $200 million in 200 global communities by 2020. The company
invested more than $62 million in corporate charitable
contributions as part of FedEx Cares in FY19.
In FY20, FedEx launched an ambitious new initiative to build on
that good work. FedEx Cares 50 by 50 aims to directly impact 50
million people by the company’s 50th anniversary in 2023. FedEx
Cares 50 by 50 enables social change around the world through a
combination of charitable giving, in-kind contributions, and team
member volunteerism focused on direct and positive impacts to
individuals.
