Chevron Corp. (CVX) reported an operational disruption and flaring of gases Monday at its Richmond refinery in northern California.

In a statement to the California Emergency Management Agency, Chevron said there was a "flaring event due to a process upset that happened in one of the units. The problem has been identified and are working on remedying it."

The refinery added that an unknown amount of hydrogen sulfide was released into the air due to the flaring, which it said began before dawn Monday morning.

The 250,000-barrel-a-day Richmond refinery is located just north of Oakland.
