Barclays PLC is cutting more than 1,000 jobs in the U.K., the Unite union said Wednesday, a number that is denied by the British Bank.

Unite--a recognized trade union in Barclays--said that the bank is closing its Leeds processing site by the end of the year, with the loss of 800 jobs. It also says a further 345 jobs are going across the country, including 157 in Coventry.

A Barclays spokesperson said the number quoted by the union isn't correct and that a total of 250 jobs are going.
