International stocks trading in New York closed higher on Friday.

The S&P/BNY Mellon index of American depositary receipts edged up 0.9% to 154.22. The European index gained 0.7% to 146.92. The Asian index climbed 1.3% to 183.36. The Latin American index edged down 0.1% to 194.98, while the emerging-markets index moved up 1.2% to 308.66.

Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. was among those whose ADRs traded actively.

The Chinese e-commerce company rose 3.4% after Chinese authorities recently acquired a stake in its subsidiary.

AstraZeneca PLC rose 1.4% after the pharmaceutical company said tezspire received a positive opinion from the European Medicine Agency's Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use for self-administration in a pre-filled, single-use pen for patients ages 12 and up with severe asthma.
