Apple Inc. said Friday it will move its June conference for developers to an online-only format as technology giants continue to adapt to the global spread of Covid-19.

The conference, aimed at developers who make third-party software for Apple's platforms, is in its 31st year and has been held in San Jose, Calif. since 2017. In some previous years it took place in San Francisco.

"The current health situation has required that we create a new WWDC 2020 format that delivers a full program with an online keynote and sessions, offering a great learning experience for our entire developer community, all around the world," Apple marketing executive Phil Schiller said.

Facebook Inc. last month canceled its 2020 developer conference, which had been scheduled for May. Amazon.com Inc. earlier this week moved a conference for its Amazon Web Services platform scheduled for April to an online-only format.

Apple said it has committed $1 million to organizations in San Jose, Calif., that would lose revenue with the in-person event's cancellation.
