Airbnb Inc. said it will start providing temporary housing to 20,000 Afghan refugees globally for free starting Tuesday after the collapse of the Afghan government.

The vacation-rental platform said the cost will be funded through contributions to Airbnb.org, an independent nonprofit affiliated with the company, from Airbnb and Chief Executive Brian Chesky, as well as donors to Airbnb.org's refugee fund.

The company said Airbnb.org will collaborate with resettlement agencies and evolve the initiative as necessary.

Airbnb said it will share details in the coming days on how its hosts can participate in the initiative.
