Pembroke Telephone Company Delivers Triple Play Using AFC's
TelcoVideo(SM) AFC's TelcoVideo solution serving up voice, TV and
high-speed Internet over nearly 5,000 access lines in Georgia
PETALUMA, Calif., Sept. 27 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- AFC(R)
(NASDAQ:AFCI), The Acronym for Access(SM), today announced that
Georgia-based Pembroke Telephone Company (PTC) recently completed
robust deployment of TelcoVideo(SM) services from AFC. Built around
AFC's AccessMAX(TM) and Telliant(TM) platforms, PTC is offering
subscribers a 70-channel TV line-up, 1.5Mbps Internet service and a
full range of voice service offerings over the company's existing
copper outside plant. According to Steve Rogerson, central office
supervisor at PTC, the company is providing its customers with
features and functionality rarely found in even the most
sophisticated markets. "Pembroke Telephone serves what historically
has been a rural marketplace, but is growing rapidly today as a
result of activity at nearby Fort Stewart and the movement of
people from urban areas throughout the region to smaller, less
congested communities in our service area," said Rogerson. "As a
result, our customers increasingly are calling for a variety of
advanced information, entertainment and communications
capabilities. We've strategically positioned our company to be the
single source for these services." To provide reliable,
high-performance service, PTC is using AFC's Telliant as the
primary building block for providing advanced access capabilities.
The company was an early adopter of this multi-service platform and
has strategically placed five units throughout its serving area,
delivering ADSL services directly off of the Telliant chassis, as
well as serving more than 26 of AFC's AccessMAX remote subscriber
terminals via a mixture of OC-3s and OC-12s. The move effectively
placed 100 percent of the company's subscribers in range for
high-speed Internet services and 95 percent in range for TV
services. Rogerson related that the company's development plan
calls for additional Telliant and AccessMAX terminals to enhance
service quality. While 95 percent of the company's customers
currently can be provided with PTC's full range of TV and Internet
services, the company's goal is to have 100-percent coverage with
its distance between the DSLAM and the individual subscriber's
premises be no longer than 8,000 feet, assuring maximum service
quality. One of the most significant indicators of Pembroke
Telephone's access network performance can be measured in
channel-change times within PTC's TV offerings, which are affected
on video cards within the Telliant equipment being employed as edge
routers. The company's attention to serving loop length has
resulted in channel-change times generally ranging between 500
milliseconds and one second. As a result of its dependability and
flexibility, Pembroke Telephone is applying AFC's Telliant platform
to a broad range of tasks within their facilities, according to
Rogerson. "From the Broadband-Remote Access Server (B-RAS)
capabilities to Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP)
functionality, AFC's Telliant meets the company's needs for
managing Gigabit Ethernet, ADSL, ATM, OC3/12 and DSLAM
capabilities," added Rogerson. "In our network, it's the Swiss Army
knife of devices. Telliant does it all." About Pembroke Telephone
Company Founded in 1946 as an outgrowth of the Sikes Telephone
Company, Pembroke Telephone Company has grown from an initial 112
lines of basic telephone service to nearly 5,000 lines. PTC
provides residents of northern Bryan County and an area of southern
Bulloch County with a diverse range of communications services,
including conventional voice, high-speed Internet and 70 channels
of television service, including HBO(R), Cinemax, Showtime(TM) and
The Movie Channel(R) premium services. For more information about
