In commodities, Brent crude rose 0.7% to $76.38 a barrel, and WTI crude rose 0.7% to $71.76 a barrel.

The German 10-year Bund yield was flat at 2.278%, and the yield on the 10-year U.S. Treasury rose by 3 basis points to 4.261% from 4.23%. Bond prices and yields move in opposite directions.

Stocks in Asia were mixed as Japan's Nikkei 225 index climbed 1.5%, whereas Hong Kong's Hang Seng declined 0.8%. China's benchmark Shanghai Composite climbed 0.7%.
