Twitter Inc. said Thursday it's activating enforcement of its civic integrity policy for the 2022 U.S. midterm elections.

The social media company said it's launching a number of product updates that users can expect to see on the platform as the election approaches. Prebunks will be brought back to get ahead of misleading narratives on the platform.

Other updates include state-specific event hubs that will feature real-time election information from state election officials, local news outlets and journalists and a dedicated explore tab that will include localized news and resources by state as well as voter education public service announcements in English and Spanish, among others.

"People deserve to trust the election conversations and content they encounter on Twitter," the company wrote in a blog post.

Twitter's civic integrity policy covers common types of misleading information about elections and civic events such as claims about how to vote and misleading claims intended to undermine public confidence in an election.

Social media platforms including Twitter and Facebook parent Meta Platforms Inc. have faced heavy criticism for the proliferation of misinformation during elections in the U.S. and around the globe.
