FTSE 100 Rises as Oil, Mining, Travel Stocks Gain -- Market Talk

0922 GMT - The FTSE 100 index rises 1.5%, or 112 points, to 7484 as oil, mining and travel-related stocks rally. BP and Shell gain around 3% as the price of a barrel of Brent crude increases 0.6% to $87.70, while miners Antofagasta, Glencore and Anglo American are all higher. Airline group IAG is the biggest riser, up 6%, followed by cruise operator Carnival, tour operator TUI and hoteliers InterContinental Hotels Group and Whitbread. "The FTSE 100 bounced back sharply on Wednesday, bucking the negative trend set in the U.S. last night and some mixed trading in Asia," AJ Bell investment director Russ Mould says. Shares in Largest U.K., EU Airlines Open Higher on Lifting of Covid-19 Restrictions

0901 GMT - Major European Union and U.K. airlines on Wednesday opened with significant gains after the EU lifted Covid-19 travel restrictions in the bloc following the U.K.'s new guidance for vaccinated passengers. Airlines have argued that travel restrictions haven't significantly slowed rising case numbers of the Omicron variant in the region. Shares in easyJet, TUI, Jet2 and International Consolidated Airlines Group are up 3.6%, 4.8%, 2.9% and 5.6%, respectively.
