American Express Co. said it expects to post double-digit revenue growth in 2022, helped by the benefits of an improving macro environment.

The company on Tuesday posted better-than-expected fourth-quarter earnings of $2.18 a share on revenue, net of interest expense, of $12.15 billion, beating analyst expectations, according to FactSet. For the full year, the company saw revenue rise 17%, and earnings per share came in at $10.02.

"Based on our new growth plan and the benefits we anticipate from an improving macro environment, we expect to generate elevated levels of revenue growth in 2022 in the range of 18 to 20 percent and earnings per share of $9.25 to $9.65. Longer term, as the economy reaches a steady state, our aspiration is to achieve revenue growth in excess of 10 percent and EPS growth in the mid-teens," Chairman and Chief Executive Stephen Squeri said.

The company also said it plans to increase its quarterly dividend by about 20% to 52 cents a share beginning in the first quarter of 2022.
