--The U.K. government is exploring making payments to energy retailers to protect customers when wholesale gas prices rise sharply, the Financial Times reports.

--Businesses would have to return the money when prices trade below an agreed level.

--The proposal is being promoted by energy companies and is described by the government as "plausible" and "logical", the FT says.
