--A total of 113 export licenses from Huawei Technologies Co.'s
suppliers worth $61 billion were approved from November through
April, and 188 licenses valued at almost $42 billion were approved
for Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp.'s suppliers,
Reuters rseported.
--Reuters, citing documents released by Republicans on the U.S.
House of Representatives Foreign Affairs committee, reported that
more than nine out of 10 license applications were granted to SMIC
suppliers and 69% to Huawei suppliers over that period.
--In a statement, the Commerce Department said the release of an
arbitrary snapshot of license approvals "risks politicizing the
licensing process and misrepresenting the national security
determinations" made by the government, Reuters reported.
--The Commerce Department, according to Reuters, said that only
about half of approved licenses are actually used.
--Huawei declined to comment, Reuters said, adding that SMIC
didn't respond to a request for comment.
