Amazon.com Inc.'s latest addition to its sprawling business: a hair salon.

The e-commerce giant on Tuesday said it is starting Amazon Salon in London, in an area near the company's corporate office. Amazon said the salon will initially be open to its employees before it is available for the public in the coming weeks.

Elena Lavagni, the owner of the independent salon Neville Hair & Beauty, will provide hair care and styling services at the salon, the company said. The establishment will occupy two floors and more than 1,500 square feet on Brushfield Street in the Spitalfields area, Amazon said.

Amazon products will be embedded in the salon. Patrons will have access to Amazon's Fire tablets for entertainment at each styling station, and the salon's operations will involve augmented reality hair consultations, Amazon said.

At the salon's display of hair-care products, Amazon said it will test its point-and-learn technology, through which customers would point at a product on a display shelf and see relevant information on a screen. Customers can then scan a QR code that leads to Amazon's website to purchase the product, the company said.
