Italian retail sales grew in October after falling the previous month, data from the country's statistics agency Istat showed Friday.

The retail trade index increased by 0.6% in October compared with the previous month. The reading beats estimates from economists polled by FactSet, who expected sales to grow by 0.1%.

In September, retail sales fell by a revised 0.7%.

Italian retail sales in October were 2.9% above the levels registered a year earlier, the data showed.

With October's increase, retail sales recovered to February's level, Istat said, the month before the Covid-19 pandemic hit the country and prompted a health and economic crisis.
