Merck KGaA said Thursday that it will invest 10 million euros ($11.9 million) in a new plant as part of a partnership with German conglomerate Siemens AG to digitalize production.

The modular plant is expected to be completed by 2022 at Merck's site located in the Darmstadt region of Germany, it said.

The collaboration between Siemens and Merck will "result in the development of a process control system for the modular production of innovative materials and products for the electronics, pharmaceutical and life science industries," the German pharmaceuticals and chemicals company said.

The project is part of a broader program for Merck's global headquarters in Darmstadt, which totals EUR1 billion in investment to 2025, Merck said.
